The castle, which was built by Field Marshal Radetzky at the end of the 19th century on the site of the ancient church of San Pietro, has the potential to attract vast numbers of tourists. Among other things, this is due to the unique view of the city of Verona. Although an inclined elevator known as the “Funicolare di Castel San Pietro” was built on the site in 1941, it only ran until 1944. According to the specifications for the planning and construction of the new system, the elevator must be built along the historic route and an additional midway station providing access to the park and Archaeological Museum must also be constructed. No changes were to be made to the architectural features of the historical structures. The new inclined elevator makes San Pietro easier to access for visitors, boosting its attractiveness.
