The Hungerburgbahn connects the old town of Innsbruck with the Hungerburg. From there, the Nordkettenbahn goes up to the Hafelekar at 2300 meters above sea level. Visitors can reach the alpine area from the city center in just 20 minutes. The partly subterranean funicular leads from the Congress to the Hungerburg with intermediate stations at the Löwenbrücke and the Alpenzoo. While the ropeway at Kongresshaus starts on almost level ground, it ends at the top station Hungerburg on very steep terrain. For this special terrain, LEITNER ropeways developed an automatic inclination system for the two cars of the funicular. It ensures that passengers can easily board and exit from the cars at all stations. The Hungerburgbahn is one of the tourist highlights in Innsbruck and carries 40,000 passengers every month. The striking design of the stations and the Löwenbrücke is the unmistakable work of star architect Zaha Hadid.
