The adventure highlight is back

Berlin's only nature bobsled run reopens

Recently, the reopening of the natural bobsleigh run which was rebuilt after a fire in 2022 was celebrated on the Kienberg next to the Gardens of the World.

Local residents, Berliners, and visitors to the city can now once again sled down the Kienberg at speeds of up to 40 kilometers per hour. On July 11, 2024, Nadja Zivkovic, district mayor of Marzahn-Hellersdorf, Michael Tanzer, managing director of Leitner Seilbahn Berlin GmbH, and Beate Reuber, park ambassador of Grün Berlin GmbH, jointly inaugurated the newly constructed facility.

Highlights

  • 22 new bobsleds
  • An additional loop for even more riding fun
  • Driving assistance system for increased safety
  • New drive for quieter return transportation
  • Photovoltaic system on the station building

22 new bobs are available to passengers and can be used individually or in pairs to sled down the approximately 500-meter-long track into the valley. To make the driving experience even more attractive for young and old alike, the new facility has received an additional second turn. In addition to a completely new rail system, the natural bobsled track is also equipped with a new lift system for returning sleds. Instead of chain drive, the transport is now done by conveyor belt to the starting point, which ensures quieter operation and faster availability of the bobs. For safe driving fun, all bobs have a driver assistance system for distance control, which slows down the bob independently and prevents rear-end collisions with preceding sleds.

The foundations of the former operations building were renovated and reused for the new mountain and ticket station. Over the coming weeks, the new building will be fitted with a photovoltaic system on the roof, which will generate around half of the electricity required to operate the bobsleigh run directly on site.

Beate Reuber, Park Ambassador of Grün Berlin GmbH: “We are delighted that the summer sled run created for the IGA is back for our young and old visitors. The new, improved facility is a special attraction, particularly for children and families, which complements the extensive play and sports facilities in the Gardens of the World and Kienbergpark.”
